Things I do when not working at the computer

• Learning. Constantly reading and learning new things.
• Reading. I read every night. I read 52 novels a year.
• Computers. Designing martial arts software and maintaining TKDTutor.com.
• Hiking. Jog and hike woodland trails rail with my dog, Fuji.
• Target shooting. Shoot at least once a week at gun ranges with my Savage Mark II FVSR target rifle.
• Motorcycle touring and camping. I have rode and camped up and down the East and West coasts and most places in between. Motorcycling is dormant now because of back problems.
• Disc golf. I have played courses all around NC and neighboring states.  
• In-line skating. This is the way I toured cities around the world that I visited while I was in the Navy. I've logged over a 1,000 skating miles. Skating is dormant now because of back problems.
• Geocaching. This is a winter hobby, when all the snakes, spiders, ticks, fleas, etc. are dormant.

Martial Arts Background

As a child, I was always fascinated by the martial art advertisements in comic books, I even sent away for one of the booklets. After I started college in the 1960's, I remembered seeing a The Andy Griffith Show episode called "Barney's Uniform."  In the show, after Barney gives a tough guy a ticket for littering, the guy threatens to beat Barney senseless if he ever catches him out of uniform, so Barney wears his uniform continuously. To save Barney from a beating, Andy enlists the aid of Barney's Judo instructor, Mr. Izamoto, played by Yuki Shimota (an Asian-American actor who new little about judo), to teach the tough guy a lesson. The Judo shown in the show was terrible, but the show again peaked my interest in Judo and the martial arts. In the late 1960's, the martial arts fighting scenes in the Batman television show helped push me into joining a Judo dojo.

After Kuma, my shiba inu dog, died, there was a big hole in my life that needed to be filled. I considered getting another shiba inu, but that would probably have made things worse, so I researched other breeds. Nothing appealed to me so I began researching hybrids (mixed breeds from registered breed parents). I found a breeder in Roaring River, NC, HealtyPets.com, that specializes in hybrids and went to visit. The breeder had many hybrid puppies but one looked into my heart when I looked at him and I knew he was the one. He is a merle coated Brat (Boston terrier/rat terrier). He's much different from Kuma in appearance and personality but we bonded very quickly. I look forward to many mountain hikes and quiet moments by the television with him

Brats

The Brat is not a purebred dog, it is a hybrid. A hybrid is an interesting mix of two distinct purebreds, whereas a mixed breed or mutt has unknown heritage and both parents were not purebreds. The brat is a boston terrier/rat terrier hybrid. The brat is quite a small dog in size, generally ranging from 12 to 20 pounds. They have short, coarse hair and come in a variety of colors. As compared to the original boston and rat terrier dogs, they are believed to be less aggressive and more family oriented. Brats are eager to please their masters and especially love to learn new tricks from their owners. The mixture of these two unique breeds give the Brat a wide array of talents. Brats are quite impressive and well suited to stay in urban dwellings, yet they need to be taken out on frequent walks and outdoor activities. They need their dose of socialization and physical activity in order to stay happy and healthy.

The best way to determine the temperament of a hybrid breed is to look up the two breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. The experimentation of these hybrid or designer dogs has not been recognized by the American Kennel Club or Canadian Kennel Club. The key to cross breeding purebred dogs is what is called hybrid vigor, where the breeding results in a healthier dog with superior genetic constitution. However, bear in mind that the result may also have bad characteristics and genetic disorders common to each breed.
