Speed Changes

During the course of performing a pattern, the tempo should remain steady, but there may be one of more required changes in speed of the individual motions. There are two types of motion speed in patterns:

Slow. motion is performed very slowly with a slow exhale with tensed muscles as if you were trying to use full speed and power but some invisible force is resisting your movement.

Normal. motion is performed normally with full speed and power with sharp exhale.

There are also required changes in the speed in which certain combinations are performed. There are three combination speeds:

Fast. each technique performed in rapid succession at normal speed with sharp exhale on each technique. Fast techniques are normally attacks and usually punches and kicks. Examples:

Do-San 15 & 16 (2 punch combination after front kick)
19 & 20 (2 punch combination after front kick)
Yul-Gok 2 & 3 (2 punch combination after slow punch)
5 & 6 (2 punch combination after slow punch)
9 & 10 (2 punch combination after front kick)
13 & 14 (2 punch combination after front kick)
Joong-Gun 15 & 16 (pull back release and punch after back fist)
18 & 19  (pull back release and punch after back fist)
Hwa-Rang 18 & 19 (round kick, round kick, double knife hand guarding block)
Choong-Moo 14 & 15 (round kick and spin side kick)
Ge-Baek 3 & 4  (2 punch combination after twist kick)
22 & 23 (round kick and side kick after ridge hand)
Choong-Jang 46 & 47 (2 punch combination after front kick)
Yoo-Sin 2 & 3 (2 hook punches)
34 & 35 (double middle forearm block and low block)
36 & 37 (double middle forearm block and low block)
Choi Yong 21 & 22 (2 pressing blocks after elbow strike)
Ul-Ji 11 (stepping into X-stance drop)
So-San 5 & 6  (knife hand block and punch after vertical punch),
7 & 8 (knife hand block and punch after vertical punch)
39 & 40 (2 punch combination after front kick)
47 & 48 (2 punch combination after front kick)
Tong-Il 5 & 6 (2 punches after inward palm block)
14 & 15 (punches after reverse knife hand)
20 & 21 (2 punches after back fist)
