Backward
Perform all pattern backward from the end.
Mirror Image
Start right instead of left or start left instead of right.
Rhythmic Form
Group techniques into defensive units according to a pre-determined plan. Simulating reality but with perfect form.
Random Turn Command
On command, stop, turn 90 degrees (or some other amount), and resume.
Different Emotional States
Very High Energy. express volatile tension and expressive anger while using vigorous, strong, explosive, instinctive movements.
High Energy. express internal tension and non-expressive anger while using dynamic tension, strong and restrained, and conscious and deliberate movements.
Medium Energy. express formality while using firm, restrained and firm, conscious and deliberate movements.
Low Energy. express relaxation with light/fast, unrestrained, soft, and instinctive movements.
Very Low Energy. express sedation with relaxed, passive, unrestrained, soft and slow, conscious and deliberate movements.
With One Hand
In a fight, you may have one arm injured.
Unfortunately, many of today's pattern performances are: superficial, contrived, mechanical, robotic, unrealistic, posturing, awkward theatrical productions that are meant to entertain, not to demonstrate principles or an understanding of movements. Spectators tend to show wild applause as they would at a rousing sporting event.
Instead, pattern performance should display: continuity power, finesse , fluidity, realism, focus, inspiration, harmony, integration, and unity of movement. Rather than being entertained, spectators should feel awe, as if they had just witnessed once in a lifetime event. They should have the warm feeling that comes from watching a masterful performance. Many will have a tear in the corner of their eyes. After watching a masterful performance, spectators tend to sit stunned for a moment, and then rise in loud, but respectful, applause. They feel they have been witness to something special. Not many pattern performances rise to this level, but it should be the goal of every Taekwondo practitioner.
