United States Navy Physical Fitness Standards

Fitness Standards - Male Standards - Female Standards

Many different standards are used to measure a person's level of physical fitness. The United States Navy has its own standard of physical fitness that is required of every sailor. The following is a synopsis of the OPNAV Instruction 6110.1G, Physical Readiness Program, dated 10 October 2002.

The Navy Physical Readiness Test (PRT) consists of push-ups, curl-ups (sit-ups), and either running 1.5 miles or swimming 500 yards or 420 meters. Each sailor must satisfactory complete a PRT every six months or be subject to discharge from the Navy.

As a part of the PRT, each sailor is also weighed. Each sailor's weight must not exceed the maximum allowable weight shown below. If the weight exceeds the maximum weight allowed, then the sailor's body fat percentage is measured. The sailor's body fat percentage must not exceed the maximum allowable body fat percentage shown below. The way the Navy measures the body fat percentage is not shown since it is involves many measurements and charts.

PRT Scoring. Points are awarded for the number of curl-ups done in 2 minutes, the number of pushups done in 2 minutes, and the elapsed time of either the run or swim. The overall performance classification is the average of the points earned in each of the three events (add points earned for each event and divide by 3). To graduate boot camp, a sailor needs an overall performance classification of at least Good/Low, which means the average of the three events must be at least 60 points. After boot camp, to pass a semiannual PRT, a sailor needs at least an overall performance classification of Satisfactory/Medium, which means the average of the three events must be at least 50 points. The following charts show the points earned for each event by gender and age group. Overall performance classification uses the same categories and levels as used for the events.
