Heart Rate Calculator

Warning: This is calculator is only a guide; your personal heart rate levels should be determined by your doctor.

Heart rate (beats per minute) is an excellent way to monitor your body so as to keep it within the desired level of training. This calculator will calculate your maximum heart rate and the heart rates you need to maintain to achieve your desired level of training.

Your maximum training heart rate (HRMax) may be determined using the formula: (226 - your age) for women, or (220 - your age) for men.

The ranges of your maximum heart rate for various training levels may be calculated using two methods:

  • Standard Method: HRMax x %

  • Karvonen Method: HRR (Heart Rate Reserve) x % + HRest (Resting Heart Rate).

To check your heart rate, using the first two fingers, not the thumb since it has its own pulse, take your pulse and count the beats for 15 seconds then multiply by 4 to get the beats per minute. For slightly less accurate method that is easier to calculate in your head, count for 6 seconds and multiply by 10. To calculate your resting heart rate, take your pulse after sitting and relaxing for awhile. Do this for 5 days and use the average.
