Observation 79. We Failed! (12/19/06) Observation. Three mountain climbers attempted to climb Mount Hood in Oregon in December 2006 for their own self-gratification. They got trapped by a winter storm and called for help. Then hundreds of people who were enjoying their normal, non risk taking lives risked their lives, spent their own time and money, took time away from their families and jobs, and spent hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars in a effort to rescue the lost climbers. Knowing the dangers involved, the climbers’ chose to risk their own lives for enjoyment; that was their prerogative. Then, rescuers, who had enough good sense to not attempt something so risky, were drawn into the situation by the actions of the reckless climbers. After it appeared all the climbers were dead, what did the sheriff in charge of the rescue attempt say during a press conference; he said, “We failed them. We literally failed them.” Are we to believe that, after paying a fortune to try to rescue the climbers, it was our fault they died. We did not fail them! We did all we could to save them from their own misjudgment. They did what they wanted to do and they died doing it. It was their choice. Their failure to exercise good judgment led to their deaths. Put the blame where it belongs! Comments. None. Observation 78. AIDS Awareness (12/15/06) Observation. Is there any person in the United States who is not aware of AIDS? Everyone is aware of what behaviors contribute to the chances of acquiring AIDS—there are just those who not care, because they enjoy the behaviors. If you do not participate in the behaviors, your chances of acquiring AIDS are negligible, unless you are in a job where you must deal with people who do participate in the behaviors, such as when you are a paramedic or a police officer, or where you have a direct connection to people who participate in the behaviors, such as when you are the person’s lover or the person’s newborn. For most people, it is their choice to participate in behaviors that increase their chances of contacting AIDS. Since we live in a free country, they are free to make the choice; if they make the wrong choice, then they must deal with the consequences. If it is none of my business that they choose to participate in the behaviors, and therefore I should stay out of their business, then it is also not my business that they contracted AIDS from such behavior. I care about those who contracted AIDS due to no fault of their own. As for the others, it was their choice to participate in the behaviors, so they have to live, or in this case die, with their choice. Comments. None. Observation 77. More Laws (12/09/06) Observation. While listening to the news today, I heard a pundit talking about the high crime rate and what should be done about it. Her solution was that we need more laws. This makes a lot of sense. Criminals break laws; that is what they do. So making new laws will not prevent them from breaking the law, it will only give them more laws to break. Does anyone really believe there is a certain number of laws that when reached will cause criminal to start obeying them. If laws prevent crime, why not pass a law that makes it crime to break laws—that should solve all the problems. The pundit also blamed crime on the low minimum wage. How many criminals have you ever heard of who were robbing banks and selling drugs to support their families? If a man has to steal to support his family, then why is the family on welfare while the man is wearing gold chains and driving a $60,000 vehicle? Do anyone believe that you could offer a drug dealer a 10 or 15 dollar an hour job and he would turn from a life of crime and be a productive citizen. You can’t buy much “bling” on a $20,000 or $30,000 a year, especially if you have to pay taxes and social security out of it. Criminals are not concerned with earning a living; they only want to get everything they want in the easiest way possible. Comments. None. Observation 76. Looking Down on Me (12/09/06) Observation. People are always talking about some deceased relative or friend looking down on them while they are competing in a sport, winning an award, doing something dangerous, etc. If this is possible, then it means the loved one has the power to look down on them all the time. Are they doing things all the time that they would be proud of having the loved one look down and see them doing. Comments. None. Observation75. Protecting Heads (12/09/06) Observation. Why do golfers protect the heads of their golf clubs by covering them with a thin, cloth cover while they are stored in a bag, but then they use the clubs to make full power swings into dirt, sand, and rocks? Comments. None. Observation 74. Begrudge (12/06/06) Observation. I do not begrudge you for your black belt that you earned legitimately. I do begrudge you for your black belt you obtained illegitimately. I despise you for your black belt that you obtained by fraud, deceit, lies, or other illegal means. Comments. None. Observation73. First Names (12/06/06) Observation. Why do characters in television shows constantly call each other by name during conversations? How many people do you know who call you by name all during your conversations? Comments. None. Observation 72. Sending a message (12/05/06) Observation. Everyday we hear where a jury is sending a message to corporations with its verdict, a school is sending a message to its students with its rules, a television show, movie, or book is sending a message to young people, God is sending a message to everyone to stop sinning, etc. If these are indeed messages, why do they not have the characteristics of a message? There is no addressee and no subject, so people just assume what the “message” is about and to whom it is being sent. There is no content; the “message” does not directly say anything, so everything is implied. Not only does the “message” not have the characteristics of a message, it is usually not legally sent. The duty of a jury is not to send messages through its verdict; it is merely to decide guilt and sometimes to suggest or award punishment. We do not send messages by doing what we are legally or morally obligated to do. Have you seen any person or corporation get the “message” send by a jury awarding an exorbitant amount to an injured party? Have you seen any group get the “message” sent by the public statements of some politician? Do students get the “message” when the school says it is getting tough on drugs? If, as believed by some people, a few movies can send a “bad” message that may be understood and acted upon by viewers, then why does not the message of the many “good” movies also get understood and acted upon by viewers? Messages are messages only if they are clearly stated and are sent to, received by, and clearly understood by the intended parties. My being a black belt does not send you the message to a bully to quit bothering me. I send that message by clearly telling the bully to leave me alone. If the message is not obeyed, then the black belt permits me to enforce the message. If a school or any other entity wants to send a message, then it should explicitly send a message. The message should have a date, indicate to whom it addressed, indicate what it concerns, clearly state what the message intends to convey, and it should be signed by the sender. Otherwise, the “message” is whatever people want it to be. You may think your actions have “sent a message,” but that does not mean the message has been received or that it was understood as you intended. If you have a job or duty to perform, then do it, and do it properly. If you want to send a message, then do it in a proper manner, through the proper channels. Comments. None. Observation 71. Public Prayer (12/05/06) Observation. Why do Christians think they must pray in public? Do they think it will mean something to an unbeliever or that an unbeliever will suddenly believe? Do they think the prayer will mean more if it is done in public? Matthew 6:6 says “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Comments. None. Observation 70. Do Unto Others (12/04/06) Observation. I believe in the biblical admonition, “Do unto other as you would have them do unto you.” Therefore, if you do bad unto me, I assume you would that I do bad unto you, and, since I am such a generous person, I will do more unto you than you did unto me.
