Observation 9. Sheep, Wolves, and Shepherds (8/9/04) Observation. Some people are sheep, some are shepherds, some are wolves. The sheep have a need to be led and will follow any shepard who will lead them, even it is to slaughter, such as the followers of Jim Jones in Guiana, or the Branch Davidian followers of David Koresh in Waco, or the Heaven's Gate followers of Marshall Applewhite in California. Sheep are not necessarily unintelligent. Doctors, lawyers, and professors are among the dead of cult followers. Some people are wolves who prey on sheep. They are the criminals who only seek to hurt, injure, or kill others for their own benefit. There are no "good" wolves but, thankfully, there are "good" shepherds. There are leaders who genuinely care for others and will guide them to greatness. Comments. None. Observation 8. Punishing the Good (8/9/04) Observation. If you let people get away with doing things wrong, then you are punishing the people who are doing things right. If takes effort and sometimes sacrifice to do things right. It you let wrong doers escape punishment, then you are rewarding them for failure, which is an indirect punishment of those who do right. I'm not talking about crimes here, just the small everyday injustices that occur. For example, its raining at the shopping center. Most people do what is right and park in the parking lot and walk in the rain to the stores. However, some park in the loading zones in front of stores so they will not have to walk in the rain, which causes people who are doing things right have to walk around them. If store owners permit this, they are condoning the practice, which encourages the violators to do it again, and they are punishing the people who are doing what is right. When people are afraid to correct others for fear of confrontation, they are condoning improper behavior and punishing good behavior. Comments. None. Observation 7. Dumb Questions (8/9/04) Observation. How may time have you heard "There is no such thing as a dumb question." There are many dumb questions. A dumb question is one which you already know the answer. You are just asking the question to see if the instructor knows the answer. A dumb question is one you would have known the answer to if you were paying attention in the first place. Listen to reporters at news conferences, they ask dumb questions all the time. They don't ask questions to seek an answer, but to foster their own agenda or to try to make the person say something wrong. Comments. None. Observation 6. Asking for an Opinion (8/9/04) Observation. Don't ask for someone's opinion on something if you are going to argue with the opinion you receive. If you ask for my opinion on something , don't argue with me about the opinion. Accept it and then either use it or reject it. However, if I offer my unsolicited opinion, then you may argue with me about it. If you ask about whether you should do something and the answer does not agree with what you want to do, don't try to convince me you are right. That just means you were not seeking my opinion, but merely seeking validation of your own opinion. If you can't deal with the answer you may receive, then don't ask the question. Comments. None. Observation 5. Excuses (8/9/04) Observation. The only person that can cause you to be a failure is you. For every sob story I hear about why a person has failed to succeed, I can give an example of a person, who under the same circumstances, has succeeded. This doesn't mean that you will succeed the first time you try, or the tenth time you try, but, if you keep trying, you will succeed. Excuses are like opinions, everyone has one. I don't want your excuse for not fixing a problem, I want you tell me what went wrong, what you are doing to fix the problem, and when it will be fixed. Comments. None. Observation 4. Decisions (8/9/04) Observation. . Comments. sr2g2006@aol.com said... “should you to do it’? haha. before you start throwing around the word “idiot” work on your basic english, lol. TKDTutor said... Thank you for pointing out the typing error, I will fix it. Should I follow the grammatical example you present in your comment? Observation 3. Death Penalty (6/9/04) Observation. While driving today, I heard a radio ad calling for a moratorium on the death penalty. The ad said that of all the people on death row, 1 is found innocent for every 4 that are executed. That is a misleading statement. Since everyone on death row is sentenced to be executed, the statement should say for all the people on death row, X number have been proven innocent. This ratio will be much. much smaller so it would not support the call for a moratorium, therefore the false ratios is used. Because of numerous appeals, it is over ten years before a death row inmate is executed. During that lengthy process, the truly innocent are freed and others get new trials. Contrary to what to the misleading ad says, there is no proof of an innocent person having been executed. Also, being granted a new trial and the trial not being held due to a lack of current evidence or witnesses, or the trial being held and the person being found not guilty, does not mean the person is innocent. Innocent means the person was proven not to be the person who committed the crime, while not guilty means the state could not prove to a jury that the person committed the crime. The ad also said that the innocent people on death row means that the actual killers are going free. If there was no death penalty and those innocent people were given a life sentience instead, the actual killers would also be going free. Listen to what you are hearing. People mislead, people lie. Comments. Tarnak says (1/25/07). I am glad I read that, because I myself had always believed there had been many cases of a miscarriage of justice carried all the way through to execution, though I still supported the death penalty. After reading your observation, I looked it up, and you were right! There have been no recent cases of anyone innocent being exonerated after their trial. However, Ruben Cantu, born and executed in Texas, is widely believed to be innocent. He seems to be a victim of police power abuse in an extremely corrupt region of San Antonio. Observation 2. Media (2/15/04) Observation. Why is it that the media praise a person who has done one thing good in his entire life while they will crucify a person does one thing bad after lifetime of doing good? Comments. None. Observation 1. Problems (12/07/03) Observation. Everyone has them. Big, small, and trivial ones occur throughout our lives. The following is a list of problems that I have found to occur in all aspects of life, be it in school, on the job, or just in everyday life. Obvious Problem: a problem whose solution is obvious to anyone. Problem: I keep getting harassing phone calls from the credit company. Solution: Pay your bills. Recurring Problem: a problem that occurs periodically so the solution is known from past occurrences. Problem: The dog is loose again. Solution: Fix the loose fence board again. Logical Problem: a problem whose solution may be found by logical deduction. Problem: The fuse blew. Solution: Unplug everything, replace the fuse, plug each thing in until the fuse blows again, unplug everything, and then plug in the last thing that was plugged in when fused blew. If fuse blows, this thing is the problem. Intermittent Problem: a problem that comes and goes making it difficult to find a solution. For example, the rattle that goes away when the mechanic listens for it. Special Case Problem: a problem that only occurs until special circumstances. For example: a knee that only hurts when it rains. Illogical Problem: a problem that defies finding a logical solution. There are two types: Illogical Solution: the solution is found but there is no logical reason for it. For example, changing the switch solved the problem but the original switch seemed okay. Self Fixing Problem: after hours of troubleshooting, the problem disappears never to return. For example, after checking and rechecking the wiring, the light came back on.
Major Problem: a problem that is so complicated that it cannot be solved by ordinary means. For example, the doctor admits this problem is beyond his ability to solve, so specialists must be called in. Insurmountable Problem: a problem so big that there is no way out of it. For example: you just ran over and killed a pedestrian. Unsolvable Problem: a problem that has no solution. For example: you have an incurable fatal disease.
Comments. None. Observation 0. Politicians (11/11/03) Observation. I read an article today written by California Representative, Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic leader of the House of Representatives. She was was condemning the Bush administration, during this time of economic downturn and the turmoil of the war on terrorism, for not supporting an end to the concurrent receipt policy. This policy reduces the amount of money a disabled military retiree receives as retirement pay by the amount of Veterans Administration disability pay the retiree may receive. This offset of retirement payments is only done for military retirees, not for other public or government retirees. While it is true that this policy should be stopped since it is unfair and discriminates against military retirees, this is not the first time this issue has come up. Veterans lobbied for its repeal throughout the booming economy of the 1990's, while the Democrats had Clinton in the White House and Pelosi was in the House of Representatives. She did not support it then. Comments. None.
